Northern Light in partnership with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe

August 3rd, 2010

UK – The Events division of leading UK sound and lighting installer Northern Light is providing specialist technical support to the Festival Fringe Society for a number of their key events and venues.

2010 marks the Festival Fringe’s biggest and most exciting line-up to date and the number of shows has increased by 17 percent since last year to total a phenomenal 2,453 this year!

For the 64th consecutive year the Fringe will offer the world’s best and most original comedy, theatre, dance and physical theatre, events, exhibitions, children’s shows, music, musicals and opera.

Nick Read, Head of Hire and Events for Northern Light, says: “We’re delighted and proud to be supporting this world renowned event in our home city of Edinburgh. We’ve been working with the Festival Fringe organisers to ensure that they benefit from our extensive experience in theatre, events, live music, opera and comedy and receive all the technical support they require. Northern Light is supplying state of the art lighting, sound and AV equipment and staging plus technical labour and advice for both festival organised events and visiting theatre companies and performers.”

Kath M Mainland, Chief Executive Officer for the Festival Fringe Society says: “Northern Light has been extremely supportive of the 2010 Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society. Their practical advice and technical expertise has helped us to deliver a number of key Festival events and the advice service that they offered to performers has proved to be extremely beneficial. It has been a pleasure working with Northern Light.”

Northern Light has already been busy servicing a number of events on the run up to the Festival including, on June 4th, the Fringe Festival School Poster Competition and award ceremony at the Museum of Childhood. The company provided lighting, stage design, PA and crew.

Northern Light has also designed and installed decorative lighting, staging and PA for Fringe Central – the Fringe participants’ centre.

Read discusses: “Fringe Central is the destination hub for festival participants and press alike. It’s run by the Fringe Society and will play host to a series of exciting events, including a number of events curated by the Royal National Theatre. Throughout the Festival, Fringe Central will host special educational sessions aimed at those requiring more information about staging their shows. Northern Light has been tasked with ensuring that the building is easily recognisable and visible from the outside, yet provides an oasis of calm and a well equipped performance and creative space inside.”

As the largest arts festival in the world, the Fringe attracts performers and audiences from all around the planet. The 2010 Edinburgh Festival Fringe programme is bursting with talented artists from every area of the arts world. Nowhere else can you see such a variety of world-class ability and such a diverse range of shows.

Read concludes: “Northern Light considers it an honour to be part of our Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which is set to be the biggest and most exciting to date.”

Northern Light adds colour to Edinburgh Festival

August 22nd, 2009

Having been to Stage Electrics Pie and Pint event the other day, I thought it only fair I pop along to Northern Light’s ‘Plug and Play’ jolly at the rather beautiful College Quad in Edinburgh.

On arrival I immediately bumped into Ashley Lewis from Clay Paky, Alex Cowan from Pixel Range and Tom from iPix. This was the second of the two day event and I was pleased to hear that Ashley and Co had been enjoying everything Edinburgh Festival had to offer! They were certainly in very high spirits when I arrived!

This was hardly surprising given Northern Light was providing some delicious Scottish single malts, fabulous locally sourced food including: smoked salmon,  haggis and cheeses plus the usual array of wine, beer and soft drinks. For those interested in the technical side there was also a wide range of lighting and sound products on show.

Ashley Lewis showed the range of Clay Paky 300, 1200 – spot and wash fixtures, Avolites  Stephen Baird Smith demonstrated the new Art 2000 power cube and Alex Cowan of Pixel Range previewed the company’s latest architectural LED fixture – to be launched at PLASA – along with the Pixel Par, PixelLine 1044, 110 amongst others. He was very impressed with the event and said . . .

Also going great guns was Peter Kirkup product manager for Zero 88, who was offering what proved to be very popular demos of the new Orb desk. This product seems to be taking off in a big way across the theatre lighting industry – more about that tomorrow.

Nick Read who took on the role of head of hire and events at Northern Light last October said . . . (coming soon!)
